Week 3

Macro Collage
This was created on collagr.com so I unfortunately did not have many options to try out and use like some of the really neat ones I have already viewed.  Collagr.com is neat but very limited.  I also only used about 18 of the 29 photos I had originally selected for my collage to allow for more of my photos to actually be in the collage.  But I do think it still came out neat looking despite the limitations.

Thanks for showing us an example of what collagr.com can do; this was because you work of a Mac right? For some reason I can't enlarge it, but I did save it to my computer and you know what? I realized that it was actually larger than your blog displayed.

I really liked how you captured the beads and the jar of buttons. However, my favorite is the pic in the top left corner that I still can't figure out; what are those?

Lisa,
Thank you for the eye candy. The colors are great. Collagr seems pretty cool. your collage looks great. I wish that I could enlarge it. I'm a big fan of mixing the nature shots with some man made stuff. The no trespassing and the cat add a bit of an edge to the flowers. Nice work.

Lisa, The blue text definatly stands out a lot more. :) I love your collage!! It is so funny how pictures of such simple things can make a wonderful piece of art! Are your photos just repeated over and over though out the collage? I just notice that they run off the bottom of the page like they keep going...

Thanks Jay!
Yes, I have a Mac, and even though I can use Picasa, I can only use it to upload photos, bummer. I was really looking forward to trying out the collage option. Yes, on collagr.com it is very limited on your options, and in order to fit what I did in my collage I had to choose the smallest size options available. I was not happy that the bee on the flower in the second photo is barely, if at all visible. I was so excited when I saw this bee land on the Cosmo, because I had been shooting something else and I turned around and there he was, "How 'macro' ", I thought. And once I posted the collage to the blog I thought too bad it could be clicked on to show a bigger version. The photo at the very top left corner are candle votive holders. They are attached to a few pieces of wrought iron so they are one long piece. I collect glass, bottles, jars, vases, cups, whatever, and these votives I bought more for the looks than actual use. The crackled brownish glass and the air bubbles suspended within make it so interesting.

Travis,

Yes, the way the colors were arranged in this collage is why I decided to choose this one over the others that I had created. I know the size of the collage is really too bad especially since we were taking "macro" type shots. My cat photo was purely a matter of luck, because I tried taking a second photo of him and of course he decided he wanted to come over to me for attention; typical cat.. ;)
And the No Trespassing sign, is funny because I drive by this on way in to my house, our driveway is very long and is a private road, but people don't know seem to understand this, so anyways, I had gone out to shoot the apple photos down at the elementary school and on my way back in "really" noticed the sign and how it was all decrepit looking and leaning there like it used to have some meaning long ago and now was just abandoned. I took several shoots of this and I liked all but one. I will probably post some of these to flickr along with other photos that didn't make in the collage.

Christina,

Hopefully, I can remember which blue it was that I selected... LOL

Thanks! Yes in collagr.com in stitch mode (and only other option is border, which only laid the photos out one by one, side by side with a background color) it automatically repeats the photos, thus the reason I had to cut the number of photos from 29 to 18. I will have to try and get to CCV in Middlebury at some point this semester and try using Picasa on a PC to see what I could have done with my collage. If and when I do I will post a collage or two to flickr.

Great collage. I especially like the first picture, the one with the candle holders. What drew my attention was the color, the soft, warm brown is beautiful. It's also great to see the collage made with Colagr.com. I haven't tried it yet, but I found Picasa has some pretty cool features for creating a collage.

I like how you chose particular objects that have a common shape to them - the beads and the tomatoes, by doing that it creates a segway to the next subject. Particular pictures I commented on in flickr. One of which is not as pronounced in the collage as it is by itself which is the flower with the bee on it. The flower is on the right side of the picture which I think makes it more interesting (artistic wise) rather than the straight on dead center shot. What made you decide on what to use as subject matter? What was your inspiration?

I really enjoyed your collage. The beads are awesome. I also like the flowers the colors are so vibrante. The candle holders on the top right have such a soft brown that they draw your attention to them. Thank you for telling us about a different sight to do collages at. Nice pictures.

Rachelle,

I took photos on two different days and the first day I was not too excited about it because it was macro. Knowing this I knew it would be painstaking for me for two reason, I personally do not like to walk around an shoot nature unless something catches my eye and lights that creative internal fire (kind of like you know it when you see it but can't describe otherwise). And the second reason knowing that on macro focusing is sometimes an issue, which I generally like my the weight of my focus to be centered (I can always focus with the shutter half way down and then change the focus on another subject in the shot). So on the second day I knew I had to get this assignment done. The day was a lot nicer- warmer and not windy like the day before. I was glad to be able to get outside and do my homework. As far as inspiration or having any commonality (ie round, circles) amongst my shots there really wasn't any thought put into it other than I needed to take photos of small objects, and there were a few (the cat, the sign) I wanted to see what would happen if I took photos of large objects on macro. I mainly walked around outside and looked for things that caught my eye (I live in Ripton and we have had several frosts so there isn't much left for flowers). It was mainly trial and error.

Alina,

Thanks!
Browns are one of my favorite colors. Seriously, that is the main reason why I bought the votives. It looks great in my living room, but we hardly ever light them since we installed a generator last summer, for when the power goes out, and before that we were always lighting many, many candles just so we could walk around the house normally.

Tracy,

Thanks!
The beads were actually hanging in my teenage daughter's room, on a lamp. I saw them and loved how the colors were arranged, and at first thought I could just snap a few shots right where they were but the lamp post part was ugly in the shot so I carefully, to not disturb the order they were in, picked up the beads and carried them outside and looked around for somewhere decent to hang them on. Well I found this sapling type pine tree and figured it could hold them. Well it didn't and there went the order of the colors, after that it was somewhat of a crap shoot, and I tried not to be overly conscious of how the colors laid together. The colors of the flowers are what drew me to them, plus Cosmos are one of my favorite flowers.

Anni,

I love colors and summer. This was the last nice day of summer here in RIpton (Friday, the 19th). It has since been late fall like, with VERY frigid morning temps in the low 30's or below. I didn't realize when I moved from MA that I was moving to Alaska ; )
I jest because I like the heat and summer weather. I enjoy fall too but up here is a lot colder a lot earlier, and I have not yet become fully accustomed to it. I used to ski in high school, so having the Snow Bowl (Middlebury College) only 8 minutes from my house has got me back into skiing again. My husband has also got me into snow shoeing, such great exercise, and the best way to get me outside in the cold winter weather. 8 )

Lisa - the collage came out great. Sometimes we artists have to allow for the serendipity of something we didn't quite plan. I agree with other folks...there's something about the beads that really draws me in. And worry not you can use these macro photos in future projects. I think you will be able to download Picasa on a student machine at CCV. Then you plug your thumb drive or CD with photos into the machine and Picasa will recognize them and you can go from there. Picasa will let you save the collages you make as a jpg to a thumb drive...

Karen,

Thanks! It was hard only having a few choices (but sometimes that really is better) to create collages with, but when this one came up I knew it was the one.
Also thanks for the advice about using a CCV computer lab. I will definitely find sometime before the semester is over to get there.
