Rule of Thirds

Grapes_Center by you.    Grapes_Off
The off center photo of grapes seems to pop out at you more than the ones in the photo were they are centered, which gives them the 3D effect compared to the grapes in the first photo which look flat and 2 dimensional.  Also comparing the two photos the ones on the bottom look more "real", as if they were really there and not added later through photo manipulation.

Tree on River by you. Tree on Rock
In these photos the tree that is off centered puts it in relation to where it is and why it is sitting on rock no longer with dirt.  If only the first photo was posted you might not even realize that it is actually by the river. (These are photos of the river that was flooded back in August, much has changed on this river.  The flood photos are posted on Flickr.)  The tree in the second photo doesn't appear as lonely either, though I really do like the first photo because of the solitude.  This road that the river runs along is the main road to get off the mountain, and so I have been itching to get photos of this tree before winter comes and takes it down; today I accomplished two tasks at once.

I seem to have enjoyed most of the offcenter shots that the class has taken more than the centered ones, but your centered tree is amazing. I know that it doesn't show where the tree is as well, but it still pulls my eyes over the whole composition. It is just a strange kind of sight seeing the tree sitting on top of the rocks like that. I'm glad you were able to take this picture before the tree was gone.

Travis,

Isn't the tree on the rock just so surreal? I anticipate this seeing this tree when I drive down the mountain, and I am always in awe of how it just sits there. Can you imagine my expression the day I drive by and the tree is not there? I will be dumb founded.

Hi Lisa,
This is a comment for all of your pics - great pics! I really love the grape picture, the colors are rich and the leaves surrounding the grapes frames it wonderfully. This goes with all of your shots. I think when using the rule of thirds it creates more visual elements within the picture, especially with landscape shots. Did it take a few shots to get the 'right one'?

Rachelle,

I have no idea why, but I took a ton of photos of those grape, and didn't even realize it until I was viewing them on the computer. And at first I was like what in the world were you thinking, but like you said the colors are so rich, that I had a hard time narrowing it down to the two for this assignment and just had to use two for the framing assignment too. :)
I had also decided to play around with settings just for kicks and giggles, and had wished I had a pen and paper with me. I guess I will just have to do some more experimenting ;)

Your grape shots are really great. Even though the second one does follow the rule of thirds, I believe that the first one does too. I guess the way the leaves and the grape vine are shown makes it, in my opinion, more grounded.

I'm drawn to the grape photo as in my spare time (haven't in a year) I make mead which is honey wine..I like the first grape shot because it's framed by the foliage perfectly, second one those grapes jump right out at me. I like the top tree photo as well because it has interest above and below a horizon...
